images-11Ever have your computer keep rebooting mysteriously? Or a game console that you paused and came back to find it off?  Well in my days of running a server on a very cheap budget, I came up with a solution to find out if it was unknown forces messing with the power or a person accidentally unplugging/turning it off.

All you need

  • Power Strip (if your appliance isn’t already connected to one)
  • Cheap Digital Clock (Don’t put batteries in it)

What you do is just plug your computer, console, etc. into the power strip and also have the clock on that power strip.  If you ever see the clock blinking 12:00 it is a good chance your device shutdown from loss of power and not person.

Tip TuesdaySome of your Windows installs can become sluggish over time, and in contrast to my other Quick Fix on Clearing your system memory, you can speed up your computers shutdown process with another shortcut icon! Here is a quick fix, by creating a Shortcut icon to click on when you want to shutdown your computer, without the wait!

  1. Right click on your Desktop and go to: New > Shortcut
  2. In the location box, type this in: shutdown -f -t 0
  3. Click Next, and for the Shortcut name call it “Shutdown Now!” or “Shutdown QuickFix”… what ever you want.
  4. When done, click Finish.

Next time you feel like shutting down your computer (if you do), then click this desktop shortcut and it will shutdown your computer without the wait.

Tip TuesdayHave your shoe laces ever worn off the plastic tip caps, and they start to fall apart and you cant get them to stop tearing? Well, here’s a quick and easy way to stop it from wearing out anymore.

What you need:

  • A lighter
  • A hard surface
  • Willingness to get your fingers singed a little.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Take the shoe lace and the lighter and start to burn it. Soon it should start to catch fire and burn, at that point, turn off your lighter.
  2. Take the shoe lace and in a twirling motion start to dab it on your hard surface. This should get off most of the looser strings on it and give it have a smoother surface.
  3. Repeat Step 2 and this time, take your fingers while it is still fairly warm and pinch it and twist it until it is in a point like shape. (Warning: If it is too hot it could burn you and leave a small blister.)

That about does it. Repeat these steps as many times as you need. This really saves you if you don’t have the time and the money to buy new shoes or shoe laces.

Tip TuesdayHiccups are caused by an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm; typically this repeats several times a minute. The sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the glottis to close, creating the “hic” noise. These tips may not have worked for the girl who had hiccups for 37 days, but here is a small list of the simple remedies to try before you get stuck with them for a few weeks, months, or even years.

How to cure your hiccups:

  • Hold your breath for as long as you can.
  • Get a cup of water and gulp the water every 5 seconds for 1 minute.
  • Get a tablespoon of sugar and down-it.
  • Suck on a jolly rancher. Sugar is a good solution!
  • Get someone to scare you
  • Have a friend bet you the next time you hiccup, they owe you 5 dollars.
  • Jog in place for 2 minutes. You are tuning your diaphragm to-pace.

Those are some suggestions we have on curing your hiccups. Do you have a special technique that always works? Share it with us in the comments!
