skipscreenDo you find yourself downloading from sites that make you sit on the page for some time before the download even starts, or even hide the link to the actual download; making you search threw advertisements to find it? We all hate that and someone has finally taken the initiative and created a script to take all that out of sites, it is called SkipScreen to add it; just go here just click the “Add Extension” button to add this to your firefox arsenal.  For you techies out there this is just some fancy javascript, not an extension.  However it is bundled as an extension to make firefox notify you when it is updated.  To see the actual coding behind it, i found a copy @ pastebin.

If you find you dislike this product you can disable it by going to

  • Tools > Add-ons in firefox.
  • Navigating to the Extension tab at the top
  • Locating SkipScreen and clicking disable.

My  only complaint so far is that I have a RapidShare account and when using this plugin it always clicks on the “Free” button.  Who knows maybe in an update they will add support for authentication in a future version

As many of you avid firefox users know one of the major disadvantages is that it uses an absurd amount of memory and can slow down your computer.  Now this will not magically reduce its footprint on your system but it will attempt to ensure Firefox doesn’t slow your system down when it is minimized.  The idea is to have it dump all its memory onto you hard drive when minimized and then reassign it to the memory when you bring it back up.  It doesn’t require any installation and is pretty simple to enable/disable so you really don’t lose anything for trying it out.

To Do This:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. In the place you normally would type a website, type: about:config
  3. Once you browse to this page it will have a large list of items, right click anywhere on the list and create a New Boolean
  4. Title the Boolean config.trim_on_minimize and hit enter and then select true
  5. Restart Firefox and this should be done!
  6. In the future all you have to do is find the config.trim in the list and double clickk to enable/disable

For all those who use chrome because it has a quick, but miss all those nifty firefox plugins you should check out the Firefox Beta 3.1.  It seems to be about 1.5x faster at processing javascript with its default javascript engine, which you should be able to use without any issues.  However there is an even faster engine available to 3.1 that may have a few bugs but in all fairness chrome has a lot of bugs aswell.  Also firefox 3.1 has a nifty feature to switch between tabs, by using Ctrl Tab.  It functions similiar to alt+tab but for tabbed windows instead of open programs.

To enable the new JS engine:

  1. Open firefox beta
  2. Where you would type the URL(websites) type about:config and hit enter
  3. Search for ‘javascript.options.jit.content‘, you can also search for javascript.options.jit.chrome aswell but this may cause your browser to crash more frequently.  The content works on javascript that runs on pages .chrome works on javascript that is apart of the browser itself
  4. Double click on the result it gives you and that will change its value from False to True
  5. You are now using the blazingly fast javascript engine, you can turn it off by repeating steps 1-4

Get firefox beta here.

Have you ever went back and fourth between your wordpad and web browser copying and pasting?  Well with firefox 3.0 you can select sections by holding Ctrl (windows) or cmd (os x) and selecting any additional spots.  May not be one of the “coolest” new features of 3.0 but it defintly is one that will keep me using firefox as i don’t think IE, Chrome, Opera will do this.  Commenters please let me know if this works on other browsers.

Firefoxy!Mozilla Firefox is known as one of the fastest web browsers available. Now, have you ever considered the possibility of making it even faster? This tutorial will show you how to do just that.

What You’ll Need:

  • Any PC running Firefox 3

Estimated Time:
1-2 Minutes

Let’s Get Started!

  1. First, open up Firefox 3.
  2. In the address bar type about:config
  3. A small warning message will pop up saying that messing around with the program might mess with your warranty, however we know what we are doing, so just click Continue.
  4. Right click anywhere in the about:config page area, and select New>String.
  5. Then type nglayout.initialpaint.delay in the textbox and hit OK.
  6. Another textbox will come up. In it, simply type 0 and hit OK.

What we just did: Firefox waits 250 milliseconds before loading a page, but after this quick tweak, your page will load immediately after you hit “Go”.

Finish It Up

  1. Mozilla also recommends that you create content.notify.interval and set it to match the nglayout value (0)

That’s It! You’re done!
