There is nothing you can do to stop this. The best thing to do is give the battery a full charge at the end of the day when your done using it. NiCads also tend to grow "hairs" or "crystals" in them, this also happens naturally over time. Its magnified by overheating the battery, and improper charge techniques which some would say cause the "memory effect". This all will shorten the life of a nicad. This can all be reversed fairly easy will a simple trick to burst the hairs in the cell. All it takes is a jolt from a good battery. I found this guide very helpful when I was looking for a repair for my Craftsman and Dewalt batteries.
