The Ten Essentials of Camping
Posted by: deathshadow391 in Other, tags: Camping, Outdoors, Ten Essentials
As a Venture Scout and regular camper, I can safely say that the Ten Essentials (of Camping) are extremely important. If you’re ever lost in the outdoors without them, the chances are that you won’t have a very fun time (or possibly even survive). Here’s a quick guide on what they are and how to use them!
- Pocket Knife
This can be a very important tool in the outdoors. It can be used to cut bandages, make kindling, and even help you start fires. - First Aide Kit
When camping, minor injuries can be very serious. Anything from a Splinter to a scrape can become infected must be treated immediately. A good kit will have the following: Bandages, Cleaning Alcohol, Gauze, Pain Relievers, Rash Cream, and Moleskin. - Backup Clothes
You always want to carry extra clothes with you just in case you get soaked. Not only would you be miserable but you would risk becoming very sick if the temperature dropped. - Flashlights/Batteries
You never want to get caught in the dark. - Water
This is the most important essential. You should always bring more water than you think you need. (This is especially important at high elevations). Also, it’s best to keep the water in high impact Nalgine bottles that wont break or leak. - Rain Gear
If you’re ever caught in the rain you will be thankful for bringing a Rain Jacket and a RainCover for your tent. (You should also have something to protect your bags. - Maps and Compass
You really don’t want to get lost while on a hike. If you know how to use them, you can always find your way back to civilization in case of an emergency. (A GPS system is more efficient but you should always carry the map/compass just in case the GPS fails) - Matches and Fire Starters
Fire is an important thing to have when camping. You can use it to Cook, Scare off Predators, and light your campsite. You should store these in a waterproof container so that they don’t become wet and useless. (Or dip them in Wax) - Sun Protection
A sunburn can be very annoying while you are camping, and if it’s serious enough, end your trip. You should always have Sun Lotion, Sunglasses, and a hat with you while camping or hiking. - Extra Food
If you get lost it may take people days to find you. A good stock of backpacking rations could be the difference between life and death. Some good food to bring would be Energy Bars for snacks on the trail to keep your energy up and Freeze Dried backpacking food for meals. (Although the backpacking food does not sound all that appetizing, camping stores like Big 5 carry some great stuff like Chicken and Rice, Beef Stew, and my favorite, Rice and Vegetables.)
Stay safe, and happy camping!
