Taking NotesLaziness and carelessness- outputting less productivity than you would like. This is a big problem for myself, and many other people as well. The problem that we face is we find no motivation to do anything, and even if we try to self-motivate; it fails. The ultimate solution to curing this problem is not time, or anything tangible. I have found the only way to prevent laziness is to index your time spent each day on the activities you perform. Heres a brief overview:

Why It Works

The goal of taking notes to prevent laziness revolves around a general concept. The goal is that you will come to a realization of how much time you are wasting, thus motivating yourself for success in the future. If you dont exactly understand, follow this tutorial and you should easily grasp the concept. After taking notes (at the end of each day), review how much time you have “wasted” and what you “wasted” it on.

The Noting Process

All you will need for this is a pencil/pen and a piece of paper (any size is fine, small is good for mobility; be sure you don’t take notes using some kind of electronic, distraction device– we need focus!) For each list item you write down, be sure to note the time of occurrence and exactly what you did.

  1. The moment you wake up in the morning, grab your writing utencil and piece of paper. Write down the time you woke up and as the item, list it as “Awake” (or something similar).
  2. As you perform daily tasks (or waste time), write each event down. Start and finish of each task.
With this, you are indexing your time; we want to keep track what were exactly doing every day.
  3. Generally, after performing all of your daily tasks that can but are not limited to: getting ready, watching TV, going to work, playing guitar hero, going to the gym, or reading Tutorial Ninjas, you then want to write down the time you go to sleep.

And as the phrase goes: lather, rinse, repeat.

Hopefully this objective of taking notes of your free time does not become burdensome to your daily tasks, but it should be later referred to after indexing your time for a minimal of 3 [week]days. By doing this, you should see the impact and severity of your procrastination, or laziness, and how much time you didn’t spend on that 5 page essay, or reading assignment you now have overdue.

Later in time, try to replace timeslots with productive tasks. Instead of following your usual of “playing guitar hero”, try to spend half that time with something productive, and the other half– back with your games.
