Problems with your NAT on Xbox Live? Change it!
Posted by: Pork in a Box in Games, tags: Microsoft, NAT, Xbox LiveNOTE: This is VERY IMPORTANT that your Xbox 360 and computer are connected to the exact same router, or else this will not work and good luck finding a different way.
Alright, so here I will tell you all how to open your NAT. I’m running Vista, but XP isn’t much different from what we’re doing.
I’m not going to go into too much detail on what your NAT is or why it should be open, but in short, if your NAT isn’t open, you will have a hard time finding games, and it won’t let you join a friends party half of the time. So lets fix this problem.
- Go to your computer, and get to Network Connections. To do this, you will click on the start menu, and go to “My Network Places”. Once you get there, click on “view network connections” to the right in the Network tasks box. If your computer is hooked up directly to the router, you will be using the Local Area Network, and if you are wireless, you will be using the Wireless Area Network
- Right click on your connection, and then go to “Status.” If you are using XP, click the “Support” tab at the top. If you are running Vista, you will need to click the button that says “Details.”
- After you click on “Details” or “Support”, look for and copy down the Default Gateway, and the Subnet Mask. You will need this later.
- Close this out, and go to your 360 dashboard. Go to the system blade at the very end of the dashboard, and go to Network settings.
- Go down to Edit Settings. Change your IP address settings from Automatic to Manual.
- Depending on what your default gateway was, you may have different settings than mine.
- For IP Address, enter your default gateway. Instead of one digit for the last number, you will need to change it to something such as 109.
- Enter the Subnet Mask(default for most networks is 255.255.255.0) and Default Gateway in the boxes, and press OK.
- Now, run a test for Xbox Live. More than likely, you will end up failing the DNS check. This is alright, because we will take care of this in the next step.
- Go back to Network Settings, and then change your DNS settings to Manual. For primary DNS server, enter your default gateway.
- Run another Xbox Live test, and you should pass everything. However, your NAT will probably still be Strict or Moderate. If it is open, then you are done!
- Go back to your computer, and open up your browser. Type your default gateway into the address bar, and press enter. A username/password box should come up. This site has a pretty complete list of routers and passwords.
- Once in, look for a link titles “Applications and Gaming” or something along the lines of that. Click it, and then find DMZ. Click it.
- Click the “Enable” radio button, and type in the last(4th) octet of your IP(octet1.octet2.octet3.octet4) Save your settings, and exit.
- Go back to your 360 dashboard, and run another Xbox Live test. If all went well, you should now have an open NAT! Give yourself a pat on the back, and dance around the room a couple times.

i have my pc connected via wireless, my 360 is then connected to my pc, so i’m bridging the connections.
other than going hard wired to the router, any suggestions or tips to increase speed performance to the 360 with this setup?
also skimming through not sure if you mentioned it or not, but you should also set the port 88 and 3074 to forward under “applications and gaming” (going off what i’ve read on another site to properly setup a stable NAT open connection
maybe thats why i’ve had a decrease in speed though… i dont know
OMG ive tried hundreds of different things and this actually worked. i love you im visiting this site everyday 4 4ever
PS. if any one has verizon fios like i did there r some problems but theyre easy to fix.
First you’ll have an actiontec router which isnt on that site the username is admin the password is password (or it might have been password1 dont exactly remember) unless you changed it
also on step 14 you’ll find no such thing as a radio button so go to DMZ host on the left right under port forwarding
type in the IP of the 360 then check the DMZ Host ip box and your good to go
once again much love to tutorial ninjas
yea in those accounts and passwords there was none for airlink101 modems or anything like that iv tried a lot of passwords and accounts but still nothing and some it would take me to a pink page and say somthing and not let me do anything
The radio button is the round button in the DMZ page.
Tried all the tips you gave above and my NAT is still strict. Can you please help. What am I doing wrong. I have a D-Link 524 router
i do not get step 7 to change the ip adress can someone help me
Mike choose any IP Address you want that is not on your network. Such as 192.168.1.233. The last number can be anything from 1-255 as long as it hasnt been used. Ask in the forums if you need more help as questions in the comments rarely get answered.
my router is not on the list, i have a D-link-120+ and i dont know what to do now someone help me
i did all of your steps but my mtu tests failed…..i have no clue how to fix this…everything else worked perfect….if anyone knows how to fix this then please tell me
now i got amy password, i had netgear, not dlink, but im on the site and i cannot find “Apps and gaming” or something liek that…
Tried it out with my Verizon FIOS internet (forget the router), and I’m sure I did everything right but I’m still getting a moderate connection
my default password does not work i think i may have changed it years ago but can;t remember what is was is there anyway i can fing out what the password is? note my router is a Linksys WRT54G if it helps pla reply asap
awesome much respect for you guys. had to do a couple of things differently for my d-link router (oh and the password is admin). DNZ was under the advanced tab, and i had to input the ENTIRE ip adress of my 360. apart from that thats awesome guys
Hi, thanks for this guide… but I’m stuck on step 12. I have a WRT54GX2. http://www.speedguide.net/broadband-view.php?hw=125 When I type in the password and press ok, it either goes to a pink screen (saying the password is incorrect) or tries to load a page that always stays 1/4 of the way loaded. Help?
Hi, im using a Netgear WGR614 V6 router. I get to step 13 and i cannot find the “Applications and Gaming†link. I also am a little confused with the IP(octet1.octet2.octet3.octet4) can someone please help me?
plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee when i type in my default gateway in my browser it goes to google and i have tried at least 4 slightly different gateways
i have the same problem as mike f, i cant find the “applications and gaming” link.
What he means by octet1 and so on is a default IP address on your network… Example of his “octet1.octet2.octet3.octet4″ is “192.168.1.109″.
What you are to do is put in your 192.168.1.OCTET4 … replace OCTET4 with the number you used in step 7.
For those of you on Netgear routers… this is a direct quote from the Netgear KB (knowledge base) on DMZ:
1. Open a Web browser, and type the router’s IP address (The router’s default IP address is 192.168.0.1). Click Go.
2. Enter the username and password for the router (Default username is admin and password is password).
3. From the browser Main Menu select Advanced > Security. Some routers, such as the MR814, use the WAN Setup Options, page, instead.
4. Enter the server’s IP address.
5. Click Apply.
Java, I do what you told me. I click default dmz server, type in 109 for the last digits of the ip. i press apply and it doesnt work.
and i cant find the “radio” button
It doesnt necessairly mean your router will show a radio (circle) button… its what is normally shown on other routers.
i have netgear and i did all of the steps properly but i still have a strict NAT. can someone plz help asap
admin did not work for the password to my linksys WRT54G, is their any possible place i could find the password?
ok i have everything and im going smoothly my only problem is that the DMZ thing is giving me a warning about some outside intrusion thing and im wondering what i should do? is it safe? seeing as though im only 13 years old and am just folling this guide from halo 3 to google to here, i dont have any idea what im doing plz help.
OMG im going crazy now… i cant enter anything for the DMZ it only says enable…i enabled it for a couple of seconds to quikly test xbox live and it was still moderate…plz help im dieing here…
im on the last step. i have a netgear router and have found how to change the last octet in my DMZ setting. but i am still confused on which ip i put in there. the ip i manually placed into my xbox ends with 109, but my other ends with 2. i have tried both and each time it comes out to be strict, what do i do?
When i change my ip address i fail the test part for my ip address what should i do i put 192.168.2.142 in for my ip
Hey, I’m stuck on number 14 on the octet. I have tried so many numbers that my NAT still says strict. Are their any other numbers that I can use so i can play with gamers?
Woo! You Rule! Yet Another Great Tutorial! One Thing Though, Im Using A Netgear Router, And The Website Did Not Have A Apps And Gaming Page, Instead I Had To Enable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP On The Site). But Now It Works Perfectly! Hope That Helps Anyone Else With A Netgear Router… Also, Default Username And Password Is
Username: admin
Password: password
Thanks Agian!!!
Thank you sooooo much for the help on this issue with NAT. I took several mins to for me to find games on Halo 3 and now it takes seconds. You rock…..thanks!!
ok this is making me mad. i had open nat type before, but it was like a generic nat that didn’t let me play with like anybody. now its back to strict, and it works the same. i want a real open nat type and ive followed all of these steps and its still not working. helllllp
omg thank you so much i av just turned it to open, it couldn’t be more happier rite now lol!!!!!
Note that i did say it has a pretty complete list of routers. If it doesn’t have yours, google your product code.

hey,
i really need help. My nat is set to moderate and i have been trying so lang and hard to change it to open. Can some 1 help me. plz
if this helps my router is a netgear WGR614v7 and i have an ethernet cord to hook up to my computer which is in the same room and it uses wireless internet from the router downstairs.
oh my bad…the ethernet cord is hooked up to my computer and it uses wireless internet lol plz help
come on some one plz plz plz help me. I am 15 and I am not all that smart and i need some ones help.
this worked for me when nothing else would, thanks! It seems though that Netgear routers will make “Open” NAT type just by clicking on the “enable” button and plugging in the 4th octet of the IP address. Thanks again
jason, to explain what i did above, find your Default Gateway by using the steps given by Tutorial Ninjas (i think steps 1 and 2), the go to internet explorer and type it in in the address bar. (the Default Gateway should look something like 167.189.1.2) a netgear window will pop up and now you should type in information found on the back of the router, a username like “admin” and a password like “password”. this should get you a new bunch of router settings (for NETGEAR its Netgear Smartwizard) so go down to WAN Setup. click the box for Default DMZ Server, type in the last number after the last period of your Default Gateway (for mine its the 2 shown in the example). Then hit the NAT Filtering option to “Open” and then hit apply. Test your xbox live connection as stated by Tutorial Ninjas and it should be open, at least if your xbox is connected to the router by ethernet cord, not wireless. any questions?
Well I do not know the password for my router, how do I go about changing it or finding it?
Thank you so much! I have never known how to do this, and this was a great help! I can’t wait to see if this will make things better.

I have put in the octet1.octet2.octet3.octet4 using the same on from your example, Put it in my Xbox 360 along with my router DMZ. It is still saying moderate on my NAT. Arg need some help please
We got our xbox connected to Verizon FIOS in about 20 minutes. We used the steps above through step 12. We connected to the FIOS router (192.168.1.1) and got the login/password promot, entered the login password that was left by the installer (admin/xxxxxxx) and we were connected to the wirelesss router. On the main menu on left, click on Enable Applications(Games, IM & Others). Sent to the ‘Port Forwarding’ screen. Click the red ‘Add’ at the bottom of column 1. Use the Specify Address dropdwon on the first line and enter the IP address of the Xbox.
Online 2 where is ask to ‘Specify Protocol’ Select ‘Spefcify Protocol’ a new list will show many more selection, one of them is XboX. Select this. Set these WanConnectioin Type: All Broadband Devices, Forward to Port: Same as incoming Port, When should rule occur: Always. Click Apply. Ans then Apply on the Port Forwarding screen. Go to Xbox, test and it should connect to the Open NAT.
followed steps and nat is still on moderate. Wouldnt work with the dns set to manual at all.
okay i did what you said but mine was still strict so i have been playing tih my router settings, no need to explain it all, but heres what i did to finally get mine workin
For the linksys wrt54gx2 after all the above mentioned
go to administration
scroll to bottom and enable multicast then tets xbox connec5tion test should work did for me thanks guys now,
back to bad comany.
my router is not on the list its a actiontec dsl gateway someone help me
When i get to step 8 the subnet mask i enter 225.225.225.0 which is the right one because i looked it up on my computer but it sayd this is invalid this adress must be in the format of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Plz help i have been having trouble with this for ages.
By the way, you need to be NOT using bridge mode on your router, I was using Bridge but it wouldn’t let me enable UPnP on it that way, so I enabled it on my modem instead. Since the router was on bridge mode then i thought it might work but it didn’t, so I tried changing my modem to bridge mode and my router to do the WAN config AND enabled UPnP on it and it worked!
so remember - your router needs to be NOT on bridge mode, your modem does. Some routers have a detecting thing so once you’ve switched your modem to bridge mode, try reseting your router and you might nt have to do any setting work.
thanks, bye
i’m stuck at step 12
i entered my default gateway into the adress bar but i dont understand a user/pass box should come up ?
i just write it in http://www.google.be/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:nl:official i think its wrong so where do i have to whrite it then ???
I’m stuck at step 12. My problem is not this eazy i gess i got the rooter from monotorola the SURFboard but another model, if i enter the dafault gateway in my browser i end up with only to typ in my password and if i don’t type annything i end up in a window saying quick setup and advanced setup. I have found somthing about DMZ and also somwhere where stand gaming apliances in the text but with DMZ i got to typ in the new octo4 right but it has to be changed aswell on my xbox i’ve done both. Buth somewhere there stands that i got to change my standard ip to the ip i made up (only the last three didgets). But i think my ip adress changes constantly, but is there also i step then i can change this in a steady ip and change the ip to i use, btw my modem is conected to a router if this ain’t a problem.
i dont get what to do on number 14. what do i change?
