If you have ever wanted to make your own home-made models or a nice case for something you just designed, this tutorial will show you how to make your own plastic and form your desired figure.
What You Need:
- Styrofoam (or those small things called “packaging peanuts”)
- Acetone (Some say nail-polish remover works too, but acetone is the purer form)
- Small glass container (Such as a jam jar or can)
Lets get to work!
- Pour a small amount (thin layer, 1 tablespoon or so) of acetone into your jar.
- Take your styrofoam and put it into the jar. It will start to dissolve and become like goo.
- Continue to add styrofoam to the jar till it will no longer dissolve.
- Wait at least one minute for some of the acetone to evaporate.
You’ve just made your own home-made formable plastic!
Now… If you have a molding, don’t be afraid to touch the plastic mixture. If you would like to shape it with your hands, then go for it!
This plastic mixture will take a minimum of 12-24 hours to fully cure. Future encounters of your new formed mold and acetone will cause it to restore to its original, goopie state.
Be sure to wash your hands after handling this, and only perform this in a well ventilated area (outside)!
The fumes from acetone are toxic, and are not meant to be inhaled!
Have fun making plastic molds!
