Connecting an Xbox360 to Xbox Live via OSX (aka. save $100 on a wireless adapter) [or any other system for that matter] How many times have you ran a long ethernet cable to your Xbox to save $100+ on a wirless adapter? How many never even use live because the Xbox is too far away? Well if you have a macbook, or any osx machine, you can share your internet to any console! This guide describes how to set up sharing with a 360, but the guide is really for anything. I will break this into two parts, the Mac Side and the Console Side. This is for using the guide with other consoles.

Mac Side This is probably the easiest part.

  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Click Sharing.
  3. Click Internet. Now here is where you can choose cool things, like plugging your macbook into a modem and making it a wireless router or what we want, connecting to a wifi network, and acting as a wireless game adapter.
  4. Click where it says “Share your connection from:” and choose AirPort.
  5. Click Built-in Ethernet.
  6. Click Start. The following steps usually isn’t necessary, but I do it for good measure.
  7. Click Show All.
  8. Click Network.
  9. Click Built-in Ethernet.
  10. Click where it says “Configure IPv4″ and choose Off. You are now done setting up the OSX side of this!

Console side (detailed for Xbox360)

  1. Go to the Dashboard, if not already there.
  2. Go all the way to the right, to system.
  3. Choose “Network Settings”
  4. Go to “Edit Settings”
  5. Click “IP Settings”
  6. Click Manual
  7. Put 192.168.2.* with star being anything from 2-254, i usually do 2 for IP Address
  8. Put 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet Mask box.
  9. Put 192.168.2.1 for the Gateway.
  10. Go back the the main Network Settings page and choose DNS.
  11. Choose Manual. This is the tricky part, you will need to know your router’s config page. Usually 192.168.1.1 if you have Linksys or 192.168.0.1 for Netgear. For god measure, do step 12a, on the Mac.
    • a:Open the terminal, type ifconfig en1, look for where it says inet, it will say 192,168,*.*, replace star with numbers. The first one should be 0 or 1, the second could be anything. If it is an 0, than put 192.168.0.1, if it is a one, put 192.168.1.1 in the next step.
    • b: Click “Primary DNS”, put whatever you got from step 12a. Thisi is your router’s config page. Alternatively, on your computer type “dig” into the terminal, look for SERVER, and put that ip in the DNS.
  12. Test You should also port forward UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074 to your Mac.

It is normal to get a Moderate NAT test result, you can host games, but you can’t be discovered. You must invite people. Enjoy!

Sorry, you need an xbox live account. this is just to act as an adapter.

  3. Jason says:

Is it any slower than if you would connect it directly? I am on DSL so I don’t want it to lag out. X [

  4. Corbin says:

not really, but the connection NAT may be moderate, meaning you may have a few problems joining some games. it works fine for me though
