To start off from the beginning, this is not a tutorial and I will not be directing you how to use Last.fm. I am going to tell you all you need to know about it, what it does, and what the benefits are. If your still interested, keep on reading!

What is it?

To make life simple, ill give you the wikipedia definition of it… this is only because people that read my english never realize what im trying to explain because I would tell you everything but the objective.

Last.fm is an Internet radio station and music recommendation system that merged with sister site Audioscrobbler in August 2005. The system builds a detailed profile of each user’s musical taste, also recommending artists similar to their favorites, showing their favourite artists and songs on a customizable profile webpage, comprising the songs played on its stations selected via a collaborative filter, or optionally, recorded by a Last.fm plugin installed into its users’ music playing application.

Whats it do?

Last.fm is a service that runs as a plug-in for selective media players. It is for all operating systems, so if you use Windows, Linux, Mac, dont fear you wont be able to use it. On a quick note… it is not Windows Media Player compatible. Other than that, if you are into Linux or Mac, chances are you have already stumbled upon this. It is included in many popular Linux media players like Amarok and Helix Banshee.

The plug-in will gather information of songs you have played, and submit the data to a website… (Last.fm). While doing so, the more music you listen to the more matches of people it will find. That brings me to my next point, since Last.fm collects your music information (tags, etc) and submits them to the website, Last.fm will find people who listen to the same artists you listen to… so in result you can find more music of the stuff you want to hear!

On occasion you will find a free download, bonuses, new people… and much more!

Whats in it for me?

I cant say you will be completely satisfied with this plug-in, but if you are really into music and desperate (or not) for finding new artists to listen to, then I really advise you give Last.fm a try. Dont get me wrong, but Last.fm is a cleaner, beneficial, version of myspace. NO, they are not affiliated in anyway.. and if they were I would definately rethink about writing this advisory post. It does have some features alike, such as a comment box where you can add friends to your friends list, but this is on a global level. Last.fm brings people together from all over the world sharing music… common places other than the USA are Japan, China, Europe (all countrys), and Canada.
