Happy New Years! I don’t know of any better way to kick it off other then giving some tips on improving your gas mileage:

  • Stay away from the brake as much as you can, if you know you will need to stop or slow down get off the accelerator earlier, this will give you a much better gas mileage.
  • Don’t use features you don’t need. Any electrical thing in your car will cause your alternator to work harder keeping it juiced up, don’t use your Air Conditioning if you don’t have to or have the windows down.
  • Drive with a light foot, not heavy. A lot of people like to floor it however they don’t realize how much gas they waste. I am no expert but from my observations it looks like you get about 50% less MPG when you floor it in almost any make of car! Think of it as you were running, not driving if you sprinted 100m you would get tired out much faster then you jogged.
  • Keep a log of different gas stations and the MPG you get. Some gas stations do fake some numbers such as the amount of gas it gave you. Or they just plain out dilute their gasoline making it cheaper for them and hurting your engine.
  • Inspect your air filter and if needed replace, also replace the fuel filter as manufacturer recommends.
  • Keep your tires at the PSI the manufacturer says, by having low psi in tires i makes it harder for the wheels to turn. Killing your acceleration and coasting.
  • Oil, Change it regularly.
  • Going at high speeds, keep the windows closed. They kill the aerodynamics of your car, killing your gas mileage.
  • Keep a log, a decrease in mpg normally means something is wrong and needs to be looked at. Parts that are famous for lowering your mpg are the following:
    • Spark Plugs/Plug Wires
    • Fuel Injectors
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve(EGR)
    • Vacuum lines and grommets
    • Filters
  • Last but not least try that fuel with a higher octane (more expensive), it may be more expensive but some cars will get much better mileage counteracting its price.

Have a safe and fun new years!
