Why:
Whether you are trying to speed up your torrents or play some games online, chances are you will run into some troubles. This may be the fix you’ve been looking for.
Security Risks:
By setting up port forwarding you are creating a door to your computer from the internet, however this door is normally locked. This doesn’t mean a local program cannot unlock this door.

How:
First thing you need to bypass your physical firewalls, this is more then likely your router. You will need to be able to access the firewalls control panel. Don’t know how? Don’t fear it’s actually very simple. If you already can get inside your router, skip to step 5.

  1. Go on a computer that you want to forward the port to (create the door).
  2. Now get the IP Address and Routers IP(chances are it is the gateway).
  3. Open up your favorite web browser and type ‘http://gateway’ replacing gateway with your gateway.
  4. Chances are you will be prompted for a user name and password.
  5. Now find out where the page is to forward the port. It could be called: Port forwarding, Applications, Firewall, or Games.
  6. Add the rule for your ip by adding your IP, the port range, and then most likely it will ask if you want it to be TCP,UDP, or Both. Both will always work but chances are unless it is specified it will be tcp. Also if there are checkboxes to the left chances are you will want to have it checked(this just enables the rule).
  7. Click apply, ok, open the program that needs port forwarding and see if it works, if it doesn’t then chances are you have some software blocking it.
  8. I have detailed guides with pictures for the Windows XP Firewall and McAffe, if you do not have either feel free to leave a comment but after reviewing everything you can apply your new found knowledge and do it yourself!

Advanced
Check Your IP or Gateway:

  • Windows: Start>Run>cmd and type Ipconfig /all
  • Mac: In Network Utility(use spotlight to find it) find your default adapter one of the En’s normaly. or use ifconfig in the terminal
  • Linux: in terminal use “ifconfig” for the ip(it will not be the “lo” that is a loopback) and I think the command “route”, would give you the gateway.
