Happy New Years! I don’t know of any better way to kick it off other then giving some tips on improving your gas mileage:

  • Stay away from the brake as much as you can, if you know you will need to stop or slow down get off the accelerator earlier, this will give you a much better gas mileage.
  • Don’t use features you don’t need. Any electrical thing in your car will cause your alternator to work harder keeping it juiced up, don’t use your Air Conditioning if you don’t have to or have the windows down.
  • Drive with a light foot, not heavy. A lot of people like to floor it however they don’t realize how much gas they waste. I am no expert but from my observations it looks like you get about 50% less MPG when you floor it in almost any make of car! Think of it as you were running, not driving if you sprinted 100m you would get tired out much faster then you jogged.
  • Keep a log of different gas stations and the MPG you get. Some gas stations do fake some numbers such as the amount of gas it gave you. Or they just plain out dilute their gasoline making it cheaper for them and hurting your engine.
  • Inspect your air filter and if needed replace, also replace the fuel filter as manufacturer recommends.
  • Keep your tires at the PSI the manufacturer says, by having low psi in tires i makes it harder for the wheels to turn. Killing your acceleration and coasting.
  • Oil, Change it regularly.
  • Going at high speeds, keep the windows closed. They kill the aerodynamics of your car, killing your gas mileage.
  • Keep a log, a decrease in mpg normally means something is wrong and needs to be looked at. Parts that are famous for lowering your mpg are the following:
    • Spark Plugs/Plug Wires
    • Fuel Injectors
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve(EGR)
    • Vacuum lines and grommets
    • Filters
  • Last but not least try that fuel with a higher octane (more expensive), it may be more expensive but some cars will get much better mileage counteracting its price.

Have a safe and fun new years!

Cable companies report that 55% of traffic in the US is due to torrents. What is a torrent? Well it is a peer to peer network which can deliver insanely fast download speeds at no cost for the hoster! It also puts a nice cloak on whoever put the file out there, which means you can get almost any song or software. Including the new Windows Vista for free!

To get started you will need to get a torrent client here are my recomendations per OS, if you want one client to handle any OS you can get Azureus but it can be a memory hog and slow down your machine.

  • Windows: utorrent, it is free small and very memory efficient meaning it won’t slow your computer down.
  • Linux: rtorrent, like utorrent but for linux.
  • Mac OS X: you can get rtorrent if your brave, or Transmission if you like a gui.

Now after you installed it you can go to a torrent tracker and search for you want such as Torrentz.com or ThePirateBay.org.

How to improve your speeds!

  • Set up port forwarding or DMZ for the computer running the torrent, you should look in your torrents preferences for the port range. Their are no ports dedicated for torrents anymore due to ISP’s putting restrictions on those ports.
  • Put a cap on your upload speed, I suggest capping it to 20kbps but you can always look at what the max seems to be and dividing it by 2.
  • If you are on windows xp sp2, chances are it is only going to allow 10 connections which will kill your download speed, use this program(mirror) to change that number, any number between 50 and 100 should be fine.

What:

This is a tutorial on how to setup CUPS (C Unix Printing System), with a Windows host.

Why:

  • To be able to print documents from your beloved Linux machine.
  • Printing to a printer over wireless / wired (remote) network.
  • Setup a shared printer from a windows computer located on your network.

What You Need:

  • All of the CUPS drivers, devs, documents, firmware, attachments, what ever installed. I install them using YaST2, you can self compile if you feel like it, although I don’t recommend because it is most often to return an error.

How:

  1. Open up Terminal. I like to use X Terminal, Gnome Terminal is plain for my taste. Use what ever you want!
  2. Issue the command “smbclient -L name -N”. Replace name with the NetBIOS name of the PC that is sharing the printer.
    • In my case, I type “smbclient -L family-computer -N”
  3. Once issued, you will hope to return information with Share names, Type, and Comments. Often you will recieve the DOMAIN name, OS, and Server too.

    Sharename Type Comment
    ——— —- ——-
    IPC$ IPC Remote IPC
    SharedDocs Disk
    print$ Disk Printer Drivers
hp photosmart 1115 series Printer hp photosmart 1115 series

    Domain=[FAMILY] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

  4. I hope you spotted correctly, were looking at the share with the type of “Printer”. It is not DISK! Those are drivers!
  5. In FireFox or Konquerer or what ever your browser is, navigate to: http://localhost:631/
    • If you have to login, login with your root user account name and password.
  6. At the welcome screen click “Add Printer”.
  7. Type a name, location, and description. These do not have to be specific, they are only for pleasure purposes.
  8. Next comes the device type. For our case connecting to a printer on a windows share, select “Windows Printer via SAMBA”. Then click Continue.
  9. Now, if you did not have to provide a password to that remote computer when following step #2, your Device URL will look like this:
    • smb://name/printer
      • Example: smb://family-computer/hp photosmart 1115 series
  10. Once you do that your printer should be added. It will most likely ask if you want to try a test print, its always good to.

Now that your printers setup, you can print in Open Office and all of your other applications. The printer name selection will appear as CUPS/PrinterName when you are going to print.

Why:

  • Put files on your school share that your admins/teachers won’t see!
  • Hide your password list file on your computer.
  • Impress your friends
  • and so many more!

What you Need:

  • WinRar
  • Basic command line knowledge

How:

  1. Rar up the file you want, right click and choose “Add to *.rar”(if you need help for *nix/os x please join the forums and ask there!)
  2. I normally put both files i want into a folder now
  3. Go into command line and get into the folder your rar is at.
    • Windows: Copy /b ‘the image’ + ‘the rar’ ‘output filename’
    • Linux/OS X: cat ‘the image’ ‘the rar’ > ‘output filename’
  4. Send the output file.
  5. Receiver unarchives it with winrar and the files magically appear!

Examples

  • Ok I have the file TutorialNinjas.jpg, and Passwords.txt in the folder HiddenCreate
  • Now i will rar up passwords.txt(refer to step 1), this created a passwords.rar in the same folder.
  • I open up a terminal/command prompt and navigate to the folder with passwords.rar and TutorialNinjas.jpg
    • Windows Users:
      • copy /b TutorialNinjas.jpg + Passwords.rar Picture.jpg
    • Linux
      • cat TutorialNinjas.jpg Passwords.rar > Picture.jpg
  • Now if i open up the image it displays regularly
  • However if i open it up in WinRAR i can view the hidden contents!

Oh and by the way, ill try and make your day again. Have a joke:

Joe met Suzi in a nightclub. They enjoyed each other’s company very much and at the end of the evening Suzi invited Joe to her place, where they quickly got involved in a very passionate and energetic session in bed together.

Finally, tired and satisfied, they both lay back in the bed and snuggled up close to each other. After a short while, Suzi began tenderly stroking Joe’s manhood.

Surprised but appreciative, Joe comments, “Surely you can’t be ready for more? Suzi replies, “No, but every now and then I get a bit nostalgic, and I miss the days when I had mine.”

Have a Merry Christmas,

On the sixth(6th) day of Google, Tutorial Ninjas gave to me…
So im on break and have all this time in the world. Well, actually I don’t. Im spending most of my time being productive, of course. On a personal note I still have to compile my turn table, mixer, and other “jazzy” things list of what to buy over time & break. Anyways, today we have DVDs! Wow, did I just say that? Yeah your jumpin’ outta your pants. To be honest, this is probably one of the most useful Google tricks to search because I can search the main term and come up with GREAT results -fast.

Its all about the modifiers, which are the things after your search query, like -md5 -md5sums ect. You make em up!

I present you, the structure of the search!

  1. “parent directory ” DVDRip TITLEHERE
  2. “parent directory ” Xvid TITLEHERE

Onto some examples for finding DVDs on Google:

Hey, anyone up for some mid morning humor? Its only 4:00 AM.

I phoned up a really gorgeous ex-girlfriend of mine the other day. We lost track of time, chatting about the wild nights we used to enjoy together. I couldn’t BELIEVE it when she asked if I’d like to meet up and maybe rekindle a little of that magic.

“Wow! I said, I don’t know if I could keep pace with you now! I’m a bit older and a bit balder than when you last saw me!” She giggled and said she was sure I’d meet the challenge!

“Yeah,” I said, just so long as you don’t mind a man with a waistband that’s a few inches wider these days!”

She laughed and told me to stop being so silly! She teased me, saying she thought tubby bald men were cute.

“Anyway,” she said, “I’ve put on a couple of pounds myself!”

So I hung up on the fat bitch.
